Is Your Current System Ready for 2027?

Queensland’s final smoke alarm deadline applies to existing owner-occupied homes, townhouses and units from 1 January 2027. A compliant system must use photoelectric alarms that meet AS 3786–2014, be interconnected throughout the dwelling and be installed in the required locations. Homes being sold or leased are already required to meet the upgraded standard.

An alarm can still beep when its test button is pressed and yet the overall property may not be compliant. The wrong sensor type, missing bedroom alarms, units more than 10 years old, mixed alarms that do not communicate, or an incomplete layout are common gaps.

Upgrade and Interconnection FAQs

For the upgraded Queensland requirements, every required smoke alarm within the dwelling must be interconnected so activation of one causes all alarms to sound. The final deadline for existing owner-occupied homes is 1 January 2027; sold and leased homes are already covered.

Interconnection can be achieved by wiring or by compatible wireless/radio technology. The alarms must still meet the required Australian Standard, use photoelectric sensing, have an acceptable power source and be correctly positioned.

Possibly, but only if the existing units remain within service life, meet the required standard and are compatible with the completed interconnected system. Mixing brands or product generations without confirmed compatibility can cause unreliable operation, so we test the system as a whole.

Yes. Under Queensland’s upgraded requirements, alarms are required in each bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, and on each storey. Where there is no hallway or no bedroom on a level, alternative placement rules apply.

Timing depends on the number of bedrooms and storeys, existing hardwired points, ceiling access and whether faults are found. After reviewing the property details, we can give a clearer indication of the expected scope and appointment time.
