The deadline for the final stage of Queensland’s smoke alarm reforms is approaching.
From 1 January 2027, all remaining domestic dwellings need compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.
Queensland Fire Department states that the required alarms must be:
- Photoelectric
- AS 3786-2014 compliant
- Interconnected
- Less than 10 years old
- Working when tested
- Appropriately powered and positioned.
Required alarms are installed in bedrooms, relevant hallways and on every storey.
Smoke Alarm Placement Matters
Installing the correct alarm isn’t enough; its location is also important.
Queensland guidance includes minimum clearances from corners, light fittings, air-conditioning vents and ceiling fans.
That’s one reason professional assessment is worthwhile, particularly in homes with ceiling fans or ducted and split-system air conditioning.
