Queensland Smoke Alarm Laws January 2027.

The final stage of Queensland’s domestic smoke alarm reforms takes effect on 1 January 2027.

At that point all remaining existing private homes, townhouses, units and manufactured homes must meet the upgraded smoke alarm requirements.

Required alarms must:

  • Be photoelectric
  • Comply with AS 3786-2014
  • Contain no ionisation sensor
  • Be less than 10 years old
  • Operate when tested
  • Be interconnected with every other required alarm.

They must also be appropriately powered.
This can mean either hardwired mains power with appropriate backup power or approved 10-year non-removable battery-powered alarms, depending on the installation circumstances.

Where Are Smoke Alarms Required?
Under the final requirements, alarms are required on each storey:

  • Every bedroom
  • Hallways connecting bedrooms with the remainder of the home
  • Where there is no hallway, in the area connecting bedrooms with other parts of that storey
  • Storeys without bedrooms, in the likely path of travel toward an exit.

Positioning around ceiling fans, lights, corners and air-conditioning outlets also matters.

We can work that out for you rather than expecting you to interpret the legislation yourself.

Sunshine Coast Smoke Alarm FAQs

The final deadline for remaining Queensland domestic dwellings is 1 January 2027.

Yes. Under the final requirements, smoke alarms are required in every bedroom as well as prescribed locations elsewhere in the home.

Interconnected alarms communicate with one another so that if one required alarm activates, the other alarms sound as well.

No. Depending on the property and existing system, compliant alarms may be hardwired or use an approved non-removable 10-year battery. Existing hardwired alarms generally need to remain hardwired when replaced.

Legally, remaining existing homes have until 1 January 2027, but leaving upgrades until the final weeks could mean reduced installer availability. Properties being sold or leased must already meet the applicable upgraded requirements.

Yes. Queensland’s compliance requirements include alarms being less than 10 years old.

Yes. In fact, that’s generally the most sensible approach. We can assess what is already installed before recommending replacements.

It depends on what you’re referring to. QFD notes that some property managers request a compliance certificate as part of their own procedures, but such a document isn’t itself a general legislative requirement. However, hardwired smoke alarm electrical installation work requires the appropriate electrical testing and compliance documentation.
