Frequently Asked Questions About Smoke Alarm Installation

The number depends on your home’s size and layout. Queensland requirements generally call for an alarm in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. We assess the property before installation to confirm the correct number and positioning.

Not necessarily. Smoke alarms can be interconnected through wiring, wireless technology or a combination of both. Existing 240-volt alarms must be replaced with compatible 240-volt alarms, while eligible battery-powered installations require sealed, non-removable 10-year batteries.

Compliant 10-year battery alarms may be installed without an electrician where battery-powered alarms are permitted. However, installing or replacing a 240-volt hardwired smoke alarm must be completed by a licensed electrician. Professional installation also helps ensure every alarm is correctly positioned, compatible and successfully interconnected.

Cost and installation time depend on the number of alarms required, the existing power setup, ceiling access and whether any faults need attention. Most straightforward installations can be completed in one appointment. A clear quote should identify the alarms, installation work and any additional electrical repairs before work begins.

The existing alarms and property layout are assessed before the new alarms are positioned, installed, interconnected and tested together. You should also receive an explanation of the system and relevant job documentation. When electrical installation work is performed, the electrical contractor must provide the required certificate of testing and compliance.
